The Set Up: Mom, Son and Hans’ Tykes on Bikes

High noon, a beautiful crisp sunny day in March, perfect riding weather, not too hot and not too cold. My fifteen year old son and I donned riding gear detailed with the fast designs and the bright colors that are so kindred to the motocross sport. Not   only did my son look the part - tall and decked to a tee - he exuded the motorcycle spirit. Transformation undeniable. It’s   such a good feeling to see that kind of excitement from your teenager. The air was full of anticipation for our class together, okay-okay it’s just me tickled to connect with my son!

Our lesson took place at Hans’ Tykes on Bikes at the Texas Ski Ranch in San Marcos, Texas. Being partial to dirt riding myself,     I observed Hans give my son an intro to the clutch and braking system on the Honda XR100 dirt bike, which he had down in a matter of minutes. Next, a briefing of what the hour and half private lesson was to entail: cone drills, figure eights, zig-   zagging between each other and fast-stopping procedures. All crucial maneuvers to get us ready for wherever the glorious dirt road might take us. The lesson seemed to fly by and soon we were following Hans off to the big track to test out our   newfound skills: up the hills, around the berm and down the slopes. Yee-Haw! My son was in complete two wheel heaven    and I was in total awe of his natural ability, enough to bring   tears to my eyes and wild butterflies in my stomach. The days    of whining and begrudging my idea of taking a class together disappeared from his mind with the twist of the Honda throttle.  My son once feeling set up and put out by my “idea” is now singing my praises. Ah yes, Mothers really do know best!
