Body

To ride or not to ride? That is the question.

Broaching the subject on one particular feminine motorcycling issue is not easy: pregnancy. It is something men never have to give a second thought too. Some may say that there is no choice at all, they will park their bike for nine months until baby is born. Others, however, want more input on the possible effects motorcycling may impend: what are their option and risks. Some realistic concerns to take into consideration are hot temperatures during riding season, proper gear protection for your changing body, self maneuverability/balance, your OB-GYN doctor’s professional advice on your specific pregnancy and the unthinkable “crash.” All scenarios that can plague our mind whether we are riding a motorcycle or driving a car while we carry the most precious of packages. Research on this subject is pretty fuzzy, with virtually no studies conducted, thus no conclusive data; leaving only information based on opinion and a common- sense approach. In this age of modern women motorcyclists guided by independence, intelligence and heart, we want the choices to be ours. What would you do? Take our poll.

Soul

The women’s motorcycle movement has reached a crescendo within the biker community’s soul as a recognized force of giving spirit inspiring people worldwide to follow their lead. The Girlz to Graceland is a testament to that fact, read K.Lee Kappmeier’s introduction to the WITW Sol Sister’s message of the mission.

Feed your inner spirit: Girlz gone to Graceland!
By K. Lee Kappmeier, author and Biker Yogini

Some girls go wild during spring break but certain biker chicks are getting their kicks on the pilgrimage to Presley Place homeless shelter as well as Graceland. My biker sisters AKA “Sol Sisters” (San Diego chapter of Women in the Wind) left for Memphis as they multi task as only a goddess can by combining a charity run, documentary, and vacation all in one trip. On June 21st, 2008 10 women (more if you count the ones like me tagging along for a day or two) embarked on an Elvis extravaganza.

“Girlz to Graceland” is the group’s moniker. This trip has been more planned out and organized then any flight to the moon! The list of items to pack is a mini novel, especially compared to my usual throw and go method (mine might lack meticulous planning however my way only takes 5 minutes versus the days of packing I’m hearing about from my sisters). What is really impressive is the way this clan takes the bull by the horns and makes things happen. Maybe I should say the way they take their bikes by helibars and manifest in wonderful ways.

The ride is 15 days and covers 12 states. Most of the women have never ridden so far in one trip. They will risk not only extreme heat and rain but possible tornados and perhaps even an alien abduction as they pass through Roswell, NM.

The Charity of Presley Place is supported by Lisa Marie and the Elvis Presley Foundation. It is one of many facilities also part of Estival Communities program created and managed by the Metropolitan Interfaith Association (MIFA) in Memphis. The housing of homeless parents and children at the facility campuses offers life skills classes plus an emphasis of elective musical play and study. The Girlz to Graceland will be offering not only the money they raised but goodie bags of biker toys, toothbrushes, and miscellaneous items for the kids. It’s as if the GTG are Santa Claus in the form of Motorcycle Mamas in Memphis.

The sultry sojourn is being filmed and shall be submitted to a few film festivals. Meanwhile, you can visit www.girlzofgraceland.org to learn more and donate if the spirit moves you. If nothing else let this cross country tour inspire you to take your own dream road trip. Life is too short not to live your dreams lest you be “nothing but a hound dog”.
