July: “Women’s
Motorcycle Month?”
Who knew July was bursting at the seams with so many wacky holidays? Our
Nation’s Independence aside, of course… There’s National Bikini Month
(we probably won’t be celebrating), Nude Recreation Week, Cow
Appreciation Day, and the list goes on and on. Among these most notable
observations is Women’s Motorcycle Month. Our question is: who deemed
July as our month? Who gets to decide? Were women even taken into
consideration when the idea was stamped and approved? And so then, do
guys get August dedicated to them, or maybe it’s June when the riding
season is suspiciously milder? These things can keep a girl up at
night.
While it would be too easy to dedicate Helmet Hair magazine.com’s July
issue to this so called “Women’s Motorcycle Month,” we claim that every
month is our month. Yes, we said it. And just to prove it, we’ve
compiled a whole lot of stuff women riders have been keeping themselves
busy with each and every day – and they needn’t a holiday to celebrate.
Just ask Susan Carpenter who writes a column, Throttle Jockey,
for the LA Times. She gets to test ride motorcycles each week. She
didn’t even mention the July holiday during her interview. And then
there’s Judy Mirro, founder of the Women’s Riding School (WRS) in New
Hampshire… ok, which just so happens to take place in July, but we think
purely coincidental. Let’s not forget all the days of the year when
women motorcyclists are busy participating in charity rides and
gathering for rallies, read which ones made our Top Ten List. Only a few
take place in July.
Let’s all take a stand together and declare that we commemorate female
riders every month of the year! Starting now, starting today,
starting…this month! Oh well.
