Women Pioneers:

Honoring Women Making Motorcycle History

Trillium Muir

In May of 2007, 26 year old Canada native Trillium Muir is proclaimed the Fastest Woman on a Motorcycle at the Maxton Raceway in North Carolina. Trillium has been riding and racing motorcycles for three years and was determined to conquer record holder Susan Robertson’s amazing one-way run of 209mph. Howdy, did she ever! With an incredible amount of gusto and a stoked Suzuki GSX-R1300 Hayabusa, Trillium set the record straight with a phenomenal land speed of 218mph. Currently with that honor under her belt, she is setting her goal on, not just being the fastest woman on a motorcycle, but the fastest person on a motorcycle. Last reported she topped off her season with a land speed of 222mph! Watch out guys!

A Crash Course for Motorcyclists

The cost of an Accident Scene Management, Inc. Course: $50, the lifesaving knowledge you gain:  Priceless.

On January 19, 2008, my husband, Anthony and I
had the opportunity to take the basic Bystander Assistance Program (BAP) "A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist" in Pasadena, Texas and were completely blown away. I can’t believe that I have been on the road this long without knowing this crucial lifesaving information!

Accident Scene Management, Inc. Bystander Assistance Program Series was created in 1996, by Vicki Roberts-Sanfelipo, a nurse and motorcyclist, to address the needs of a growing concern in the motorcycle community: fatalities. According to the NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis Recent Trends in Fatal Motorcycle Crashes 2007 report states: “Per vehicle mile traveled in 2005, motorcyclists (42.27) were about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants (1.14) to die in motor vehicle traffic crashes.” Driven by this and other alarming statistics, the goal of ASMI is to train women and men
on how to effectively handle a crash, thus reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities. The Bystander Assistance Program is a series of courses that run from Basic to Professional level and revolve around the P.A.C.T. principles of motorcycle trauma.

P: Prevent Further Injury
A: Assess the Situation
C: Contact EMS
T: Treat the injured with life sustaining care

copyright John WhiteDuring the class, vital information is presented in an easy straightforward manner that reinforces the P.A.C.T. principles to prepare you for participating in the hands on drills in real accident scenarios. Some of the scenarios practiced include when and how to move an accident victim into recovery position, Jaw Thrust method of assisted breathing, securing and preserving the accident scene and also how to protect yourself while helping others. This is just a portion of the valuable resources that you will learn and leave equipped with for an
emergency situation.

As riders we are always told to be prepared for anything, this is definitely one of those things! That lingering feeling of fear in the pit of our stomachs of unknown “what ifs”, now one of them can be lessened by just knowing the proper way to handle the unimaginable: a crash. Be pro-active in enhancing the motorcycling experience-take the ASMI Crash Course for Motorcyclists, I highly recommend it. You will be a better asset to the motorcycle community for it, on and off the road.
